Hadassah the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization, whose members are motivated and inspired to strengthen their partnership with Israel, ensure Jewish continuity, and realize their potential as a dynamic force in American society. Founded in 1912, Hadassah retains the passion and timeless values of its founder, Henrietta Szold, Jewish scholar and activist, who was dedicated to Judaism, Zionism, and the American ideal.
Committed to the centrality of Israel based on the renaissance of the Jewish people in its historic homeland, Hadassah promotes the unity of the Jewish people. In Israel, Hadassah initiates and supports pace-setting health care, education, youth institutions, and land development to meet the country’s changing needs. Some of our projects include two Hadassah Hospitals, a new Mother and Child Center, the Sharett Institute of Oncology, a medical school, The Hadassah College of Technology, and Youth Aliyah which provides a home, school, and guidance for orphaned immigrant teens and teens from disadvantaged homes. Through the Jewish National Fund, we have built parks and dams and planted thousands of trees in Israel.
In the United States, Hadassah enhances the quality of American and Jewish life through its education and Zionist youth programs, promotes health awareness, and provides personal enrichment and growth for its members. Hadassah is known as an organization of empowered and influential women. Courses in leadership training, fundraising, finance, and career development are of enormous benefit to our Hadassah membership. We also offer creative programming for preschoolers (Al Galgalim) pre-teens and teens (Young Judaea), and college students (Hamagshamim). We have been involved in the fight for women’s reproductive freedoms. We have also made our voices heard on issues of anti-Semitism and the need for separation of church and state in all public areas of American life, most particularly in our schools.
Recognizing that women are confronting the demands of multiple roles and responsibilities, Hadassah offers each member, within her own time frame, an opportunity to realize fully her potential as a powerful and positive force within the Jewish community and in the United States.
